Happy New Year!

West Virginia’s streak of finishing nationally ranked in football could be extended to a fourth consecutive year with all of the bowl game losses taking place.
Going down so far have been No. 24 (Coaches’ Poll) Boston College, No. 23 Northwestern, No. 20 Pitt and No. 16 Brigham Young. And No. 14 Georgia Tech is getting hammered by LSU as of this writing.
Still to play is No. 25 Mississippi taking on No. 7 Texas Tech, No. 22 Ball State facing Tulsa, No. 19 Virginia Tech playing No. 12 Cincinnati and No. 18 Michigan State battling No. 15 Georgia.
Of course the 9-4 Mountaineers finished the season with a 31-30 victory over North Carolina last Saturday in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
And now how about a little fun before we usher in the new year ...
Not since Air Force and TCU played to a 0-0 clunker in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 1959, had a bowl produced so few points. It was also the lowest-scoring Sun Bowl since a scoreless tie in 1940 between Catholic and Arizona State.
Before you say Oregon State defense, remember, Oregon lit up the scoreboard for 65 points in the regular season finale and Penn State scored 45 earlier in the year against the Beavers.
At least Pitt fans can take solace that it only took Dave Wannstedt and Matt Cavanaugh a month to come up with today’s game plan.
OK, one more … Pitt must now wait a 27th year to try and get its elusive 10-win season. The last time the Panthers won 10 games in a year Russia was still the Soviet Union, kids had Pac-Man fever and the space shuttle was considered safe.
The problem with her presentation is the fact that Cincinnati is actually the favored team.
Somehow I think Brian Kelly will get the message to his Bearcat players.
Cincinnati's biggest problem may turn out to be P. Diddy, whose posse is taking over Cincinnati's hotel for a New Year's bash tonight. The Bearcats have since moved to another hotel.
By the way, the ACC is now 3-4 in bowl games after BC’s loss to Vanderbilt and is headed for 3-5 after LSU finishes scoring against Georgia Tech later tonight.
Happy New Year’s!
