Game and season captains for West Virginia were senior wide receiver Tito Gonzales, senior offensive lineman Ryan Stanchek, senior linebacker Mortty Ivy, senior kicker Pat McAfee and senior quarterback Pat White.
Keith Tandy was WVU’s lone first-time starter against UNC. A total of 44 Mountaineers have at least one game of starting experience. Tops on that list are senior offensive lineman Ryan Stanchek (47), senior quarterback Pat White (42), senior offensive lineman Jake Figner (38) and junior offensive lineman Greg Isdaner (37).
Pat McAfee played in his 51st career game against UNC, setting a new WVU record for career games played. He is one of eight Mountaineers in school history to play in 50 career games, joining Eric Wicks, Keilein Dykes, Thandi Smith, Marc Magro, Larry Williams, Mike Lorello and Vaughn Rivers.
Noel Devine’s 18-yard touchdown was the fourth rushing touchdown of the season for the sophomore.
Noel Devine moved passed Robert Walker into eighth place on West Virginia’s single-season rushing list with his 61 yards today. Devine now shows 1,289 yards rushing this season.
Alric Arnett’s 44-yard touchdown reception was the fifth of the season for the redshirt-junior. His fourth quarter touchdown was his sixth of the year.
Bradley Stark’s 35-yard touchdown reception was the first of his career.
Pat White’s 44-yard first quarter touchdown pass was his 19th of the season and 54th of his career. It was White’s 101st career touchdown responsible for. Later in the first quarter, White’s 35-yard touchdown pass to Bradley Starks was his 102nd touchdown responsible for, 20th of the season and 55th of his career. White’s fourth quarter 20-yard touchdown pass was his 21st of the season and 56th of his career, and 103rd touchdown responsible for.
Pat White’s 332 yards passing today were a season and career high, and the first 300-yard passing game of his career. He now shows 1,842 yards passing on the season, a career-best.
Pat White’s 26 completions today were a season and career high.
White’s three passing touchdowns today give him 46 for his career, surpassing Rasheed Marshall for second place all-time on WVU’s single season touchdown passes list.
A six-yard rush by quarterback Pat White in the first quarter gave White back his BIG EAST record as the all-time total offense leader, passing USF’s Matt Grothe. White now shows a school-record 10,529 yards of total offense for his career.
WVU’s opening drive for a touchdown marked the second straight game with a score on its first possession.
West Virginia’s 21 first quarter points tie for the most points in a quarter under Head Coach Bill Stewart.
WVU’s 21 first quarter points marked the third time that WVU scored 20 or more points in a quarter this season. WVU has scored 20 or more points in a quarter 30 times since 2001.
John Holmes’ fourth quarter sack was his team-leading fifth sack of the season and ninth of his career.
Pat Lazear’s fourth quarter interception was the first of the season, and of his career, for the sophomore.
J.T. Thomas recovered a fourth quarter fumble, forced by Robert Sands. It was the first forced fumble of the season for Sands and first fumble recovery of the season for Thomas.
Senior Pat McAfee’s 25-yard field goal in the third quarter was the 17th of the season, tying for a season-best (2006). McAfee has scored 83 points on the season and 380 points for his career.
Freshman tight end Tyler Urban had two receptions in the third quarter. The last Mountaineer tight end to have two catches in a game was Josh Bailey on Oct. 26, 2002, against Miami (2 catches for 35 yards).
The last time the WVU defense allowed a 200-yard receiver was Nov. 17, 2007, when Marcus Barnett of Cincinnati had 210 receiving yards.
UNC’s third quarter touchdown gave the Tar Heels 30 points – the most points surrendered by the Mountaineers this season.
Senior quarterback Pat White, who was named Most Valuable Player, is believed to be the only signal-caller in NCAA history start and win four bowl games in his career.
West Virginia won its fourth straight bowl game for the first time in school history.
Bill Stewart is the first coach in school history to win his first two bowl games and joins Dudley DeGroot as the only first-year coaches at WVU to win nine games.
