The Mountaineers spent the morning at Lowes Motor Speedway before getting down to business Tuesday afternoon with a crisp two-hour workout at Country Day School.
“We are very much on the same schedule we used last year at the Fiesta Bowl,” said West Virginia coach Bill Stewart. “We had nine tough practices at home and here we are on our typical Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday practice routine. Friday we will do our walk through and Saturday we will play.”
Stewart said the team will begin tapering off on Wednesday to make sure the Mountaineers have their legs for Saturday’s game against North Carolina.
“Tomorrow we will back off a little bit and Thursday we will do our typical Thursday practice,” Stewart said. “We’re hoping it works.”
So far Stewart has been pleased with the way his players have conducted themselves in Charlotte.
“I was so proud of them last night. When we got together with the kids from North Carolina I thought our young men were absolutely polished,” Stewart said. “They were having fun and I was really proud of our football team the way they conducted themselves and we were all class. The game is the game and you can forget your friendships there. In between you can show a little class and have a little bit of fun.”
Briefly:
“It’s rough but I’m here to help support (Eric) Jobe and support the O-Line and be the player-coach out there,” Dent said. “Obviously you work this hard and you don’t want to have your career end on an injury but I’m still trying to stay positive for this last week and see how it goes.”
“We’ve been through this before,” said the senior. “When we’re out on the football field we’ve got to work hard and when we’re off you get to hang out with your buddies.
“I think it was big for everybody to have a few days with their families. It’s kind of a bummer having Christmas without them.”
“I was afraid but I enjoyed it. I have no need for speed,” White said. “I drive the speed limit.”
“Whatever they do we’re going to have to counterattack and I’m sure they are going to have to do the same for us,” he said.
“The biggest challenge for us will be executing – having all eleven working toward the same goal.”
“I’m just trying to enjoy it,” White said of his last week together with his WVU teammates. “We know this is the last time we’re going to be here together as a group so we’re just trying to enjoy it and have some fun.”
