SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Takisha Granberry and Liz Repella scored 23 points each to lead West Virginia to 72-54 victory over Santa Clara Monday evening at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Mountaineers (9-2) used a 22-2 run over the remaining 5:20 of the first half to overcome an early 21-7 Bronco lead. West Virginia’s defense held Santa Clara to just one field goal during a seven-minute stretch to end the half and WVU finally found its shooting touch after beginning the game 2 of 19 from the field.
Repella and Granberry keyed the first half run by combining to score 15 of West Virginia’s final 22 points. The Mountaineers took their first lead of the game on a Sarah Miles steal and lay up with 2:04 remaining, and Granberry completed the first half flurry with five straight points.
A Repella 3 to begin the second half put WVU in front 32-23, and West Virginia expanded its lead to 11 on an Ashley Powell driving lay up.
West Virginia’s largest lead of the game was 22 points.
Granberry and Repella made a combined 9 of 17 from behind the 3-point arc as West Virginia shot 10 of 24 overall from 3.
Alex Sanabria came off the bench to chip in 11 points and Powell finished with 10 points and three assists. Sarah Miles had game-highs of nine assists and five blocked shots.
Overall, the Mountaineers shot 40 percent from the floor (24 of 60) and owned a 37-28 advantage on the glass.
The Broncos were led by Kathy Willinsky’s 13 points and Lena Gibson’s 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Elizabeth Doran scored 11.
Santa Clara committed 21 turnovers.
Santa Clara (1-12) has lost all five home games and shows just one victory for the season at Chicago State.
After a pair of West Coast victories, the Mountaineers will have eight days off until facing Longwood at the WVU Coliseum on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
West Virginia then opens Big East play on Saturday, Jan. 4, at No. 19-rated Pitt in a 2 pm game that will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
