MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Sophomore Jedd Gyorko has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pro-Line Athletic pre-2009 All-America team, announced today by the NCBWA.
The standout infielder, who was also named to the Preseason Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List, is coming off one of the best freshman seasons in Mountaineer history.
The Morgantown native finished his 2008 campaign batting .409 with eight home runs and 63 RBIs. Gyorko also added 95 hits, behind only Tyler Kuhn, and produced 17 doubles, three triples, a .612 slugging percentage and an impressive .450 on-base percentage.
Gyorko was named a Freshman All-American by NCBWA/Pro-Line Athletic, Rivals.com and Louisville Slugger last season. He garnered NCBWA/Pro-Line Athletic Second Team All-American honors as well, and was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.
He becomes the first Mountaineer since Justin Jenkins in 2007 to earn Preseason Second Team All-American honors. No WVU player has attained back-to-back All-American seasons in the school’s history.
Gyorko leads a 2009 WVU squad that returns the core of last year’s team that finished fifth in the nation with a .341 batting average. WVU begins its season with the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge from Feb. 20-22 in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla.
