MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team closes the 2008 season with a ranking of 14th in the nation in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas poll.
“For us to finish as the 14th-best team in the country is a tremendous honor and reflection of how hard this team worked all year long,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “I am very proud of this team and its accomplishments this past season.”
West Virginia finished with a 14-3-6 record after winning a third-straight BIG EAST American Division title. The three losses tie the all-time mark for fewest losses in a season with the 2002 team (18-3-1). WVU finished the season without a loss at home, going 9-0-2 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
West Virginia advanced to its ninth-straight NCAA tournament, and sixth trip to the NCAA Round of 32. Senior Deana Everrett netted two goals in the season finale, the seventh multi-goal match of her career. She leaves with 39 goals – good for third-most in school history.
Seven different Mountaineers recorded game-winning goals this season, including a team-best six from rookie Blake Miller. Miller finished the season with 10 goals, more than any WVU freshman in school history.
The Mountaineers scored at least one goal in 20 of 23 games this season. The WVU defense finished with 13 shutouts, tying the all-time record set in 2006 and 2007.
WVU loses eight seniors to graduation: Greer Barnes, Amanda Cicchini, Lisa DuCote, Deana Everrett, Kelsey Fowler, Robin Rushton, Stephanie Burgess and Michelle Molinari.
