LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were both defeated by BIG EAST rival Louisville on Friday, Nov. 7.
The men’s team was defeated by the No. 18 Louisville men, 178-122 and the Louisville women, ranked No. 26, defeated the Mountaineers, 182-94.
“We had a real good evening, as we had a lot of season best times,” Head Coach Vic Riggs says. “We had 58 season best times versus 43 against Penn State.”
The men had great performances from seniors Michael Walker, Pablo Marmolejo, Payton Brooks and juniors George Farquhar, Justin Galbreath and Tim Field. WVU also got key swims from freshman Brad Eichenseer, Martin Vanis, and Taylor Camp.
In the 200 medley relay, Walker, Farquhar, Marmolejo and Eichenseer finished second with a time of 1:32.82.
Walker narrowly missed first place in the 100 back (50.93). Walker however did finish first in the 200 free (1:50.27) and Field came in second (1:51.70).
Marmolejo set a pool record in the 200 IM with Walker coming in third place. The Mexico City, Mexico, native, also finished first in the 100 fly (49.42) and the 200 fly (1:48.36).
Galbreath had a successful day in the distance swims finishing second in both the 500 free (4:44.26) and the 1000 free (9:34.52).
The Queensland, Australia, native Farquhar finished second in both the 100 breast (57.94) and the 200 breast (2:08.57) providing points to the Mountaineers total.
Finishing off the evening, Eichenseer, Vanis, Camp and Brooks finished second in the 400 free relay (3:09.34).
For the women, junior Kayla Andrews continued her dominating season. Andrews broke pool records in both the 50 free (23.21) and the 100 free (50.51). Andrews finished second in the 100 back (57.73) as well.
Andrews was also part of the 400 free relay team with fellow juniors Stephanie Shupe, Morgan Callaway and Shaunna Purtell. The foursome finished first (3:25.59) and broke another pool record.
Callaway also had a first place finish in the 200 free (1:50.70) and placed second in the 200 back (2:02.68) and 500 free (4:56.71).
Senior Lindsey Largo finished third in the 500 free (5:02.51) and second in the 1000 free (10:06.74).
“It was a real good day from our perspective and I think it’s setting our season up well for next month at the Georgia Invitational,” Riggs says. “We are looking forward to tomorrow’s meet against Cincinnati.”
The Mountaineers will be in action Saturday, Nov. 8, at Cincinnati. The meet starts at 12 p.m.
