Cross Country: WVU Ranked No. 6 In The Nation

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team is ranked No. 6 in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Associations Division I Women’s National Poll, released today.
The Mountaineers received 294 votes in the poll and dropped one slot from last week. Washington (360) took first place, followed by No. 2 Oregon (338), No. 3 Florida State (336), No. 4 Princeton (326) and No. 5 Villanova (315). The Mountaineers are currently ranked third in the Mid-Atlantic region behind Princeton and Villanova, while being the second-highest ranked BIG EAST squad behind Villanova.
On Friday, Oct. 31, junior Marie-Louise Asselin finished first in the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., to lead the cross country team to a second place finish. Asselin finished with a time of 20:10 followed by Clara Grandt, who placed third with a time of 20:29. Junior Keri Bland finished fourth with a time of 20:32 to place three Mountaineers in the top 10.
Villanova took first place with 40 points by placing four runners in the top 10, including Frances Koons who took second place with a time of 20:13. The Mountaineers finished second with 48 points followed by Georgetown (74) in third, Providence (123) in fourth place, and Syracuse (129) points.
Up next, the Mountaineers will compete in the NCAA Regionals on Saturday, Nov. 15 at West Windsor Fields, in Princeton, N.J., the same course where the team took fourth place on Sept. 13, at the Princeton Invitational.
