MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rowing team ended its fall season with a bronze medal at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Va., on Saturday, Nov. 1.
The varsity four team ‘A’ boat of Jenelle Spencer, Brett Krumholz, Kim Benda, Kensie Phillips and coxswain Amanda Mahasky earned the bronze medal crossing the line in 19:13.1, behind George Washington (18:52.8) and George Mason (19:12.1).
“Our overall performance this year was much better than a year ago,” Coach Jimmy King says. “While the rowers and coxswains who were on the varsity squad last year recognize the progress we've made since then, there was a bit of disappointment among many of them in where we placed. The disappointment they feel isn't merely in the standings, but more significant, in the higher expectations they are beginning to establish for themselves.”
The Mountaineers had two more entries in the collegiate 4+ competition with team ‘B’ finishing in 10th (19:57.3) and team ‘C’ finishing in 17th (20.10.7).
In their first and only race of the fall season, the varsity eight boat crossed the line in fifth place (17:36.1), three spots higher than last season’s finish.
The novice squad also had a good weekend, as the novice four earned a bronze medal with a time of 17:36.1 behind George Mason (19:40.1) and Delaware (20:17.7). The novice four team ‘B’ placed 12th in the competition, while the novice eight boat finished 12th out of 29 entries.
