MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University redshirt senior defensive lineman Doug Slavonic has been named a second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.
The Pittsburgh native is currently enrolled in graduate school pursuing a master’s degree in business administration. He completed his bachelor’s degree in finance last year, boasting a 3.70 grade point average.
On the field, he has played in 10 games and started seven as a senior this season. He has 24 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. Slavonic posted a season-high four tackles three times, against Marshall, Syracuse and Auburn and had a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery against the Thundering Herd. He also assisted on a sack against Syracuse, had a sack against Villanova and had a pass breakup at Connecticut.
Since 2002, the Mountaineers have had six ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American selections, including including Jeff Berk (OL, 2004), Jay Henry (2005 and 2006), Dan Mozes (2006) and Reed Williams (2007). Since 1952, WVU has had 21 players earn Academic All-America distinction.
