MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team has earned a NSCAA Team Academic Award for its academic success by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
“I think our athletic department’s commitment to academics is second to none. This is an award that shows our players have a tremendous amount of drive, not only on the field, but in the classroom as well,” said Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc. “We are very proud of our guys for their excellence in the classroom. This is an award that truly recognizes their commitment to academics.”
WVU is one of 102 men’s soccer teams in all divisions to post a team grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for the 2007-08 academic year. The Mountaineers posted a team GPA of 3.24 last year, giving West Virginia its first NSCAA Team Academic Award in program history.
The 2008 Mountaineers qualified for the BIG EAST tournament for the sixth straight year, third consecutive under the direction of LeBlanc. WVU defeated two Top 25 opponents this season; at No. 4 Connecticut on Oct. 3, 1-0, and at home against No. 22 Ohio State on Oct. 15, 1-0.
The Mountaineers were led by midfielder Gift Maworere who garnered All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honors for the second consecutive year. Zach Johnson was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and was selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
