Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall to Rutgers

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Rutgers this afternoon at College Avenue Gymnasium in New Brunswick, N.J.
The Scarlet Knights (2-18, 1-9 BIG EAST) defeated the Mountaineers (7-17, 0-10 BIG EAST) in a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12) match.
Tied at 16 in the first set, the Mountaineers went on a 4-0 run after a kill from freshman outside hitter Kylie Armbruster, followed by a service ace by sophomore libero Bonnie West. Junior outside hitter Abby Raines then closed the set with three consecutive kills.
The Mountaineers tried their best to hold on in the second set as they tied the Scarlet Knights a total of nine times. Down 19-22, WVU fought back after a kill from senior middle blocker Lisa Hough to put them back within one. Despite their efforts the Mountaineers fell on a kill from Rutgers’ Lauren Voss.
The Scarlet Knights dominated in the third and fourth sets as they took down the Mountaineers.
Raines led the Mountaineers with nine kills and a season-high 15 digs. Both Hough and Armbruster followed with nine kills apiece, while freshman Kari Post recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 34 assists and 15 digs.
The Mountaineers return to home action with a 7 p.m. match on Friday, Nov. 7, against Cincinnati. They follow with a 2 p.m. match against Louisville on Sunday, Nov. 8, for senior day.
