MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On the heels of its first loss in the 2008-09 season, the West Virginia University rifle team soundly defeated Memphis, 4656-4592, this evening in Lexington, Ky.
The Mountaineers (6-1 overall, 3-1 GARC) regrouped after a 10-point loss (4649-4639) at Kentucky yesterday, defeating the Tigers in both air rifle (2348-2320) and smallbore (2308-2272). The Mountaineers’ winning air rifle score is 23 points better than its score in the Kentucky loss (2325).
After losing to Memphis in both 2005 and 2006, the Mountaineers have now won three straight over the Tigers and hold a 3-2 series advantage.
“Today was definitely a better day for the whole team,” says Coach Jon Hammond. “Everyone’s air rifle scores seemed to bounce back against Memphis. Overall, we are in a solid position. This win puts us in good shape to qualify for the NCAA Championships.”
Sophomore Andy Lamson matched a personal-best air rifle score with 592 points. The Colchester, Vt., native first reached that point total in WVU’s win over TCU on Oct. 25. Combined with his 578 smallbore score, Lamson finished with a match-best 1170 points, two short of WVU’s all-time aggregate score.
Lamson finished on top of the air rifle standings. Junior Bryant Wallizer finished second (588), while freshman Michael Kulbacki took third (587).
Sophomore Tommy Santelli shot 200 in prone, WVU’s only school record of the night. This is the Prosperity, Pa., native’s second 200 of the season. Santelli and Lamson finished first overall in smallbore with 578 points, while sophomore Kyle Smith took third (577).
Sophomore Ashley Zultanky also had a career day with a personal best 564 points in smallbore.
The Memphis win concludes the Mountaineers’ fall season. WVU will resume their regular-season schedule when they play host to Nebraska on Jan. 17, and NC State on Jan. 18, at the WVU Rifle Range. Both GARC matches will begin at 8 a.m.
