MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fresh off a perfect 2-0 start to the 2008-09 season, the West Virginia University rifle teams breaks from its regular-season schedule to host its annual Alumni Match on Friday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at the WVU Rifle Range.
“This weekend is a fun weekend for everyone,” says Head Coach Jon Hammond. “It’s a chance for the team to meet some old team members and share stories.”
Seven alumni are expected to participate in Friday’s match, a 40-shot standing course in either gun.
The Mountaineers (2-0 overall, 0-0 GARC) opened their season on Oct. 4 with a 4629-4535 victory over Ohio State. The team defeated Morehead State, 4647-4541, the following afternoon.
Sophomore Andy Lamson had a solid showing in both matches, shooting a personal-best 582 in smallbore in consecutive days. The Smallbore All-American also shot 587 in air rifle on Sunday for a combined score of 1169, one point short of the school record.
West Virginia returns to action and opens its GARC season with a two-match road trip Oct. 18-19. The squad opens at Army on Oct. 18 at 8 a.m., and then battles Ole Miss, also in West Point, N.Y., on Oct. 19 at 8 a.m.
“Next week we’ll get back to training and be focused on the road trip,” Hammond says. “We’re taking every match as it comes. We have tough matches both in conference and out of conference, so we need to just focus on each opponent as it comes up on the schedule.”
The Mountaineers return home to host TCU on Oct. 25 at 8 a.m. at the WVU Rifle Range. Fans are encouraged to attend the match throughout the day, as competition will last into the afternoon.
