MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Just one day after being named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, West Virginia University men’s soccer player Alex Silva was selected to the Soccer America Team of the Week today for his performance against then-No. 7/4 Connecticut on Oct. 3.
The freshman, a Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native, tallied his first career goal in the first half against the Huskies. Silva, who was charging in from the top of the 18-yard box, took a pass from sophomore Paul Paradise, and delivered it to the right corner of the net for the score at the 29:05 mark.
Silva’s goal gave the Mountaineers their third straight win against Connecticut in the past three years.
Silva is the first Mountaineer this season to earn a league honor as well as being selected by Soccer America to its Team of the Week. He leads all freshmen in shots (13), points (3), and is second on the team in shots on-goal (4).
West Virginia (3-4-3, 2-1-2 BIG EAST) returns to the pitch tomorrow, Oct. 8, with a match against league-foe Pitt (6-4-1, 2-3-0 BE). Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
