MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On the heels of its record-setting season opener, the West Virginia University rifle team set five additional school records and three personal bests in its 4647-4541 victory over Morehead State on Oct. 5 at the WVU Rifle Range.
The win gives the Mountaineers (2-0 overall, 0-0 GARC) a perfect season-opening weekend. All told, the squad set eight school records and established six personal-bests in its two victories. WVU is now 1-0 against Morehead State.
“Today was a much better day than yesterday,” says Head Coach Jon Hammond. “We had a good team total, and some really good individual scores across the board. Both our counting and non-counting scores really show the depth that this team has and the potential for some really high scores throughout the rest of the year.”
WVU defeated MSU in both smallbore (2308-2258) and air rifle (2339-2283). The team’s aggregate score equals the school record set in last season’s NCAA qualifying win over VMI.
Redshirt junior Bryant Wallizer, a two-time Air Rifle All-American, pushed the Mountaineers toward the discipline high mark, shooting a program-best mark 591. Wallizer's six strings included two 100s (100, 97, 99, 100, 98, 97).
Sophomore Andy Lamson equaled his personal-best smallbore performance from one day ago, shooting 582. Combined with his air rifle score of 587, the Smallbore All-American ended the day with an aggregate score of 1169, one point short of the school record (1170).
WVU’s non-scoring smallbore squad had a tremendous day, shooting 2317, also one point short of the school record (2318).
Sophomore Smallbore All-American Kyle Smith trumped WVU’s smallbore record of nearly one year, shooting 587 and besting the previous mark by two points. The mark is also a personal best for Smith. Additionally, Smith matched the prone school record of 200. He is the second Mountaineer to do so in two days, as freshman Justin Pentz shot 200 against Ohio State.
Freshman Michael Kulbacki established a WVU standing record of 195, besting Amy Smith’s mark of 194 from Feb. 27, 2005. Kulbacki, who also shot with the non-scoring smallbore squad, ended the day at 580.
Senior Paul Miller bested his day-old smallbore personal-best score by three points, shooting 577 towards the non-scoring smallbore total. Miller’s total benefited from a second-round standing score of 100, a career first.
The Mountaineers break from regular-season action to host the WVU Alumni Match, Friday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m., at the WVU Rifle Range. The squad will open GARC play at Army on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 8 a.m.
