MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team completed its fall season with a successful trip to the Queen City Invitational, in Cincinnati, Ohio today.
“This weekend was a positive note for us and a good way to finish out the fall season,” says Head Coach Marc Walters. “We were searching for some girls to come out and compete and they did. I feel good about our team’s depth. We surprised a lot of teams this weekend who didn’t think that we would be able to compete and we earned some respect. Hopefully we can build on that going into the spring season.”
Fairmont, W.Va. native, junior Monique Burton led the Mountaineers as she finished second in the Flight ‘B’ singles draw. Burton fell in the final round to the No. 1 seed Myriem Mhirit from Eastern Kentucky in a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 match. Burton defeated Jeanette Feider from Xavier 6-3, 6-4, to get to the finals.
Also having a good showing was the doubles team of Burton and junior Stephanie LaFortune. The pair fought their way to the final round of competition where they were defeated by the No. 1 seed pairing of Svetlana Pimenova and Alexandra Sitnikova from Eastern Kentucky, 9-7.
Freshman Milica Pantovic also had a good weekend as she made her way to the semifinals with wins over Xavier’s Cathy Starr (2-6, 6-1, 6-4) and Dayton’s Emily Buerschen (6-3, 6-0).
