MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University rowing team will complete its fall season with a trip to the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Va., on Saturday, Nov. 1.
“Our only other competition of the fall was a weather-shortened Head of the Ohio in September,” King says. “Because much of the afternoon racing was canceled, many of the rowers racing this weekend will be doing so for the first time this year. Only the fours were able to race then, so this is the only time we're boating an eight crew in competition.”
The Mountaineers will have four entries competing this weekend including a Collegiate 8+ boat and three entries in the Collegiate 4+ event.
“We're all eager to race ¬¬–eager to see not only how the new members of the varsity squad have developed this fall, but how the squad as a whole has developed in comparison to this time last year,” King says.
The novice crew will also be competing with one entry in the novice 8+ race and two entries in the novice 4+ event.
In their only other race of the fall season, the Mountaineer varsity four team ‘A’ comprised of Jenelle Spencer, Kenise Phillips, Kim Benda, Alita Meyers and coxswain Stephanie Brown came in second (17:06.7) at the Head of the Ohio in Pittsburgh.
