Men's Soccer: WVU Welcomes Marquette

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team welcomes BIG EAST Conference foe Marquette to Morgantown on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Admission is free to all students with a valid student ID.
WVU (4-7-5, 2-3-4 BIG EAST) is coming off a 1-0 loss at Georgetown on Oct. 25. Although the Mountaineers had numerous scoring chances, the team could not make good on its opportunities. Sophomore Paul Paradise led the team with three shots, all of which were on-goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Johnson made two saves in the loss.
WVU’s Johnson, who has played 1,544 minutes in all of the Mountaineers’ 16 contests, owns a 0.58 goals-against average, a mark good enough for 12th nationally. The Lumberton, N.J., native has allowed only 10 goals and has made 77 saves. His 0.885 save percentage also ranks amongst the nation’s leaders, this time good enough for eighth place.
Offensively, Paradise and freshmen Alex Silva and Adam Mills lead the team with two goals apiece. Paradise leads the team in other offensive categories: points (7), shots (34), and shots on-goal (11).
Marquette (3-8-4, 1-6-2 BE) is led by Head Coach Louis Bennett. In his third season with the Golden Eagles, Bennett owns a 6-35-9 record. He has been coaching for 13 years, boasting a 142-98-26 mark. Last season, MU went 2-12-4 and finished 1-9-1 in the BIG EAST. The team returned eight starters and 13 letterwinners.
The Golden Eagles recently fell to Providence at home, 2-0, on Oct. 25. Freshman Calum Mallace led Marquette with three shots in the loss. Despite the loss, Marquette outshot Providence, 9-5, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
Offensively, the team is led by sophomore Anthony Colaizzi, who has a team-high four goals and 10 points. Junior Nick Kay is second on the team with two goals and five points.
Marquette junior goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski has played all 15 matches in goal, allowing 15 goals and making 49 saves. Boasting a 0.94 GAA, Pyzdrowski has logged 1,442 minutes and recorded four clean sheets this season.
WVU leads the all-time series against Marquette, 2-0-1.
