MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team held its ranking in all three collegiate soccer polls this week. The Mountaineers check in at No. 15 in the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz polls, and rank No. 17 in today’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas poll.
West Virginia is coming off a pair of conference road wins that led to its third-straight BIG EAST American Division title. The Mountaineers have lost only twice this season, sporting a 12-2-5 record. WVU received a bye in first round action of the 2008 BIG EAST tournament, and awaits the winner of Pitt/Louisville for a quarterfinal match on Sunday, Nov. 2.
Defender Greer Barnes picked up her second award of the week, being named to Soccer America’s Team of the Week today. She was also named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
A Rye, N.Y., native, Barnes guided WVU to victories at Marquette and USF, its’ 11th and 12th shutouts of the season – one shy of tying the school’s all-time record. The All-America defender and her teammates held USF to no corner kick attempts. Barnes was also a threat offensively, making runs forward and registering two shots.
Barnes, a Hermann Trophy candidate, has been named to Soccer America’s Team of the Week three times this season.
