MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were defeated by both Virginia Tech and North Carolina State on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Virginia Tech.
The men’s team was defeated by N.C. State, 188.50-123.50 and Virginia Tech 200-109. The women’s team fell to N.C. State, 187-118 and Virginia Tech, 199-93, both in double dual action.
“We obviously had some people step up and we had a very tough challenge this week,” Head Coach Vic Riggs says. “Traveling the day you compete is a disadvantage and we performed the best we could.”
Seniors Pablo Marmolejo and Michael Walker both had successful meets, along with newcomer junior George Farquhar and freshman Martin Vanis.
Marmolejo had three first place finishes in the 200 fly (1:50.16), 200 IM (1:53.07) and the 100 fly (49.93). Vanis built off of previous meets this season and finished second behind Marmolejo in the 100 fly (52.23) and finished fourth in the 200 fly (1:53.36). Walker finished first in the 200 breast (2:06.29) and third in the 100 back (52.03). Farquhar placed second in the 100 breast (58.37).
Farquhar, Marmolejo, Walker and freshman Brad Eichenseer all helped for a second place finish in the 400 medley relay with a time of 1:33.40.
Junior Kayla Andrews led the women once again with two first place finishes in the 50 free (23.66) and 100 free (49.91). Andrews also finished second in the 100 back (57.44).
Morgan Callaway, a junior, finished second in both the 200 free (1:51.07) and the 200 back (2:04.33).
Senior Lindsey Largo continued her success in the distance swims finishing second in both the 500 free (5:03.05) and the 1000 free (10:09.19).
Callaway, Andrews and fellow juniors Stephanie Shupe and Shaunna Purtell finished the meet in second in the 400 free relay (3:30.69), narrowly missing first-place.
Jaryn Struder, participated in four events and broke multiple personal times along with Isabel Perez who shattered her previous times.
The Mountaineers will be in action next on Nov. 7, at Louisville. The meet starts at 5 p.m.
