MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With hopes to continue its unbeaten-streak, the West Virginia University rifle team welcomes TCU to the WVU Rifle Range on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 8 a.m.
The Mountaineers (4-0 overall, 2-0 GARC) are off to their best start since the 2003 season following a 2-0 weekend in West Point, N.Y., in which the team defeated defending conference champion Army (4659-4616) and Ole Miss (4655-4565).
“This weekend is definitely going to be our toughest test so far,” says Head Coach Jon Hammond. “TCU is one of the top teams in the country and had a great showing at last year’s NCAA Championships.”
WVU holds a 2-0 series advantage over the Horned Frogs. The Mountaineers last defeated TCU, 4603-4535, in 2006.
With only one-quarter of the 2008-09 season complete, the Mountaineers have rewritten the record book, setting team smallbore (2319), team air rifle (2346) and team aggregate score (4659) records, amongst others.
“It will be interesting to see how the team responds to tougher competition this weekend,” says Hammond. “We will have a good team result if we have a solid match. Everyone just has to shoot a consistent, solid score.”
The WVU rifle team breaks from action to host the Mountaineer Open Nov. 1-2, at the WVU Rifle Range. The event starts at 8 a.m. each morning and lasts throughout the day.
The Mountaineers do not compete again until Nov. 15, when they travel to Lexington, Ky., to meet Kentucky at 8 a.m. The squad then faces Memphis, also in Lexington, the following day at 8 a.m.
