MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Despite returning just three players from last year’s team, West Virginia was predicted to finish ninth in the Big East Conference, the league announced today in New York City.
The Mountaineers, 25-8 last year and a second-round participant in the NCAA tournament, has just one starter returning (Ashley Powell) and only three players that saw action last season. West Virginia made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances for the first time in school history in 2007 and 2008.
Connecticut was once again selected to win the league, followed by Rutgers, Louisville, Notre Dame and Pitt to round out the top five.
Syracuse was predicted to finish sixth followed by Marquette and DePaul.
After West Virginia it was Villanova, Georgetown, USF, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Cincinnati and Providence rounding out the remainder of the conference.
Connecticut, Rutgers and Louisville each garnered first-place votes. Conference coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
No Mountaineer players were picked to the preseason all-Big East team.
West Virginia opens the regular season on Nov. 14 at the WVU Coliseum against North Carolina Central. The Mountaineers’ first four games are at home this year.
