MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both fell to Penn State on Wednesday night in the WVU Natatorium. The men fell by a score of 145-93, while the women were defeated 145-84.
“We knew it was going to be a challenge, so we challenged ourselves to have in-season best times and we ended up having 47 out of 66 swims go for season best times,” Head Coach Vic Riggs says. “Penn State is a great swimming program and I think we competed well.”
Despite the loss to Penn State, the Mountaineers had a successful evening in the men’s and women’s events. The men had three first-place finishes from seniors Michael Walker and Pablo Marmolejo, while the women had strong performances from juniors Kayla Andrews and Morgan Callaway. The dynamic duo totaled for three first-place finishes including three pool records.
In the men’s first event, West Virginia took second in the 200 medley relay. Juniors Tim Field and George Farquhar and freshmen Joe Bailey and Brad Eichenseer completed the event in a time of 1:35.64.
Walker finished first (3:58) in the 400 IM, while Marmolejo came in second (4:04.08). Walker also finished first (2:06.71) in the 200 breast and came in second (1:50.90) in the 200 back. Field brought home a third-place finish (1:55.94).
Marmolejo earned first place (1:48.60) in the 200 fly. Freshman Martin Vanis had a great showing as well in the event, finishing third (1:55.21).
“I think the best power I have is to be a leader by example. When he (Vanis) came here, he didn’t know what to expect,” Marmolejo says. “I made sure right before our race to let him know it would be alright. The guy who finished second, I knew he was going to go out fast. We have a pretty good relationship.”
In the women’s 1000 free, senior Lindsey Largo had a valiant effort finishing second (10:03). Largo also placed third in the 500 free (5:01.21).
Morgan Callaway followed Largo’s success and put together an impressive first-place finish (1:49.64) in the 200 free, setting a pool record. Callaway also earned first in the 200 back (2:03.35).
Andrews also made a significant impact in the women’s scores, setting two pool records in the 50 free (23.06) and 100 free (50.22).
The final two events, the men’s 200 free relay and the women’s 200 free relay produced first-place finishes for the Mountaineers to end the meet.
The men’s relay, which was made up of senior Payton Brooks, Farquhar, Eichenseer and freshman Taylor Camp finished with a time of 1:26.06. The women finished with a time of 1:35.89, led by Andrews, Callaway and juniors Stephanie Shupe and Shaunna Purtell.
“I think Morgan’s 200 free was a real good swim and I think Pablo’s 200 fly was a good swim,” Riggs says. “We had some solid swims all the way through, we’re just a little bit behind Penn State.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech and North Carolina State.
“We’ll get back in the water and start training and we obviously put a focus on dual meets, but our focus is to compete and get better every meet,” Riggs says. “We’ll try and see what we can do on Saturday.”
The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., in the War Memorial Pool.
