BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge Schedule
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The schedule for the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, has been released, API Management and Marketing announced today.
The West Virginia University baseball team will compete in three games against Big Ten opponents Indiana, Minnesota and Illinois beginning on Friday, Feb. 20, in various venues throughout St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla.
The Mountaineers will open their season against the Hoosiers on Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. at Progress Energy Park, the Tampa Bay Rays’ former spring training stadium.
WVU will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21, against Minnesota at 10 a.m. The game will be played at Jack Russell Stadium, the former spring training venue of the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, Fla.
Illinois greets the Mountaineers in the final contest on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. The final game will be played at the Raymond A. Naimoli Complex.
The inaugural challenge features all 10 of the Big Ten’s baseball-playing institutions against eight BIG EAST representatives, which include USF, Connecticut, Georgetown, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Cincinnati, Notre Dame and WVU. Each day there will be eight games that feature a BIG EAST team facing a Big Ten club along with one non-conference contest in which two Big Ten schools meet.
Ticket information and other event details will be released in the near future. WVU’s 2009 schedule will also be released at a later date.
