Cross Country: WVU Takes First Place at Penn State

Junior Keri Bland finished second with a time of 20:11 followed by teammate Clara Grandt (20:17) who came in third place out of 300 runners, representing 28 different schools. Bland’s time was the third-fastest time at the course, while Grandt’s time was the fifth-best.
“It’s a great day for us,” comments Head Coach Sean Cleary. “For me to look at the results; I’m in awe of it. You never want to say that a team has surpassed expectations because I know we are good, but we’re running well right now. I’m thrilled and excited.”
Freshman Ahna Lewis finished in eighth place (20:56) followed by sophomore Kaylyn Christopher who placed ninth (20:59), giving the Mountaineers its’ third first place finish in four meets.
Sophomore Kate Harrison placed 18th (21:07), followed by Jessica O’Connell in 21st place (21:11) and junior Karly Hamric who finished 67th (22:11).
No. 7 WVU finished with 40 points in front of No. 20 Penn State (83), No. 25 Wake Forest (136), No. 28 Duke (154) and Tennessee (162).
The first-place finish is the third of the season for the Mountaineers. WVU took first place on Aug. 30, at the Preston Relays and on Oct. 3, at the Paul Short Invitational. WVU took fourth place in its only other intercollegiate meet on Sept. 13, at the Princeton Invitational.
Up next, the Mountaineers will compete in the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31. The meet will be hosted by St. John’s University and will be held in Bronx, N.Y.
