MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Blue team won game two of the 19th annual Gold-Blue World Series, 7-6, on Sunday evening at Hawley Field.
Sophomore Jarryd Summers pitched a solid game for the Blue squad, earning the win by giving up five runs in six innings pitched while striking out seven. Junior Andy Altemus took the loss for the Gold after allowing six runs, four of them earned, on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Tobias Streich led the Blue with three hits, including a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth inning that gave the Blue team the lead for good. Brandon Padula went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, and Clark Sambuco added two hits, including a run-scoring triple in the fourth.
The Gold team was sparked by the hitting of Jeremy Gum and Dan DiBartolomeo. Gum went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while DiBartolomeo served well in the No. 2 spot with a 2-for-3 evening, including an RBI single in the third inning.
The Blue squad took an early 3-0 lead in the third inning after Colin Durbow’s run-scoring single to center field was followed by Grant Buckner’s RBI double down the left field line.
The Gold fought back in the bottom half when DiBartolomeo’s double to right field plated Gum. Jedd Gyorko followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to knot the score at 3-3.
Michael Knight helped the Blue team regain the lead in the fourth inning after recording an RBI groundout to second base, making it 4-3. Sambuco then legged out a triple that nearly cleared the left field wall, extending the Blue squad’s advantage to 5-3.
Responding once again was the Gold team, as Gum produced an infield single that scored Justin Ellis. Chris Rasky then grounded into a fielder’s choice at second base, scoring Andrew Scherer to tie the game once again, 5-5.
The momentum quickly swung in favor of the Blue squad when Streich and Padula each had RBI singles to put their team ahead for good. Ellis’ RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth was not enough for the Gold as the Blue squad earned its second victory in the Gold-Blue World Series.
Senior Joe Agreste earned the save for the Blue squad after throwing three innings and giving up one run on two hits while striking out two.
Game three of the Gold-Blue World Series will take place on Tuesday, October 14, at Hawley Field. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
