MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 15th-ranked West Virginia women’s soccer team tallied 25 shots but failed to find the back of the net in a 0-0 double overtime draw with Connecticut Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. A crowd of 1,407 took in the Mountaineers’ fifth scoreless match of the season, a WVU school record for ties.
Missed opportunities haunted the WVU offense while the West Virginia defense was strong again, holding a dangerous Huskies team to four shots.
“It’s always frustrating when you’re hitting posts and crossbars,” said Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, whose team was held without a goal at home for the first time this season. “We are creating good opportunities but simply aren’t finishing.”
The Mountaineers recorded 20 or more shots for the seventh time this season, led by senior Deana Everrett’s six attempts.
Everrett nearly ended the match in the 108th minute on a hard shot that was stopped by Connecticut goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe. Freshman Blake Miller flicked a ball up the middle to Everrett inside the top of the box. Labbe dove to her left, deflecting the ball out of bounds for one of her seven saves.
The Mountaineers had two scoring chances on the following corner kick. Junior Nicole Mailloux served ball into the box where Everrett and junior Carolyn Blank each fired shots but came up empty. Everrett’s ball was blocked by a UConn defender and Blank’s shot at the near post was saved by another UConn defender.
The Mountaineer defense held Connecticut to zero shots in the first half. West Virginia also held UConn to a season-low four shot attempts, all coming in the second half.
“It is tough because I think we are a better team than what our record shows,” said senior Lisa DuCote. “We just need to regroup and get back out there and finish some scoring chances.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Kerri Butler distributed the ball well and made two routine saves in picking up her eighth shutout of the season.
The Mountaineers registered 10 first half shots and found the post and cross bar on shots from Everrett and sophomore Megan Mischler.
Blank nearly ended the scoring drought in the 61st minute on a long shot from the left flank. Blank beat a UConn defender and fired a winding shot just wide of the far post.
WVU generated 12 corner kicks on the afternoon, a season-high.
West Virginia has yet to score a goal in six overtime matches (113 minutes, 13 seconds) this season.
At halftime of today’s contest, the Mountaineer women’s soccer team presented a check for more than $10,000.00 to the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. West Virginia wore pink during pregame warmups on Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
WVU returns to action next weekend for its final two home contests of the regular season. The Mountaineers battle nationally ranked Georgetown at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.
