STORRS, Conn. – Freshman Maya Moore scored 25 points and center Tina Charles added 18 points and 14 rebounds to help No. 1 Connecticut to an 84-48 victory over No. 16 West Virginia Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion.
Connecticut (14-0, 2-0) scored the first 13 points of the game and was never threatened by West Virginia, now 11-4, 1-1. The Mountaineers shot just 30.9 percent from the floor for the game and were beaten on the glass 43-27.
Center Yinka Sanni finished with a team-high 12 points on 5 of 15 shooting. Sparkle Davis came off the bench to contribute 11.
Mel Thomas added 14 for Connecticut, which shot 53.3 percent from the floor and forced 17 West Virginia turnovers.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum facing Notre Dame in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPNU. The women’s game precedes West Virginia’s men’s game against Syracuse at 2:30 pm.
