MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia can add another trophy to its trophy case. Yesterday the Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) announced the final ECAC Lambert Meadowlands Football Poll, presented by FieldTurf Tarkett, and the Mountaineers finished No. 1 in the bowl subdivision voting.
West Virginia (11-2) defeated Oklahoma, 48-28 in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl to capture its third straight January bowl game and secure its second BCS bowl win in three years.
The Mountaineers edged Boston College (11-3) by eight poll points. Finishing third was Penn State with a 9-4 record, followed by Cincinnati (10-3), South Florida (9-4) and Rutgers (8-5).
To be eligible for the Lambert Meadowlands Award, a school must be located in the East or play half of its schedule against eligible Lambert teams. Established in 1936 as the Lambert Trophy to recognize supremacy in Eastern college football, the award has since grown to recognize the best team in the Eat in the Bowl subdivision. In 1957 non-Division I-A teams were recognized and in 1966 a Division III award was added.
West Virginia has won the award two previous times in 1988 and 1993.
