MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia finished the season ranked sixth in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Top 25 polls released this morning.
The Mountaineers (11-2) stunned Oklahoma, 48-28 in the 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl after finishing the regular season with a disappointing 13-9 loss to Pitt that cost them an appearance in the BCS title game.
LSU finished first in both polls after beating Ohio State in last night’s BCS title game. Georgia finished second in the AP poll and third in the coaches’ poll. USC was ranked second by the coaches and third by the writers.
Ohio State and Missouri also swapped spots in the polls, Ohio State finishing fourth in the coaches’ poll and fifth in the AP poll while Missouri was ranked fourth by the writers and fifth by the coaches.
This year marks the third straight Top 10 finish for West Virginia, ranked fifth in the AP poll in 2005 and 10th in both polls last year. The Mountaineers also finished sixth in the coaches’ poll in 2005.
West Virginia’s other three Top 10 finishes came in 1953 (10th in AP poll), 1988 (fifth in both polls) and in 1993 (sixth in the coaches’ poll and seventh in the AP poll).
