MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University wrestler Kurt Brenner was named EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) wrestler of the week after a solid performance in a pair of dual meets last week in California.
The Freedom, Pa., native notched two quality wins out West to boost his record to 6-2, including 4-0 in dual matches. Last Wednesday Brenner edged No. 14-ranked Ian Murphy of Cal State Fullerton in a 3-2 decision, helping the Mountaineers to a 27-12 victory over the Titans. On Thursday he followed with a 10-3 decision over Cal Poly’s Yuri Kalika as WVU took the match, 24-12, en route to a sweep in both dual meets.
The two-time NCAA qualifier, who moved up to the 184-pound weight class this season, becomes the first WVU wrestler this year to earn the weekly EWL honor. Last season Zac Fryling (157) and Jared Villers (197) earned the award in back-to-back weeks in February.
The Mountaineers (3-1) will compete in the prestigious NWCA National Duals tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday, January 12-13. The nationally acclaimed competition features 16 of the top Division I wrestling programs in the country.
