MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University tennis Head Coach Marc Walters has announced the team’s 2008 spring schedule.
The Mountaineers will face several new opponents this season, including talented southern squads Coastal Carolina, Elon and South Carolina-Upstate. WVU also battles Liberty and Eastern Michigan in early February.
“Our schedule is more middle-of-the-road this season in that we added several teams that are going to be 4-3’s,” says Walters. “Last year we had a large portion of matches where we either lost 6-1 or 7-0, or beat someone 6-1, 7-0. We don’t have those matches this year.”
WVU will take on BIG EAST opponents Cincinnati, Seton Hall, Villanova, Pitt, Providence, Rutgers and Connecticut.
“Seton Hall knocked off us last year in the BIG EAST tournament and Cincinnati has a great up-and-coming group of girls,” says Walters. “Connecticut is also new to us in BIG EAST play.”
The Mountaineers, coming off a successful fall season that featured several champions in four different tournaments, will begin their spring season at Marshall against Morehead State on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m. They will follow with a match against in-state rival Marshall on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m.
WVU also returns to face Penn State, Columbia and Brown in key non-conference matches. The BIG EAST Championships will conclude the regular season on April 16-20 in Tampa, Fla.
