MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team hosts Liberty on Friday, Feb. 1, in its home opener at the Ridgeview Racquet Club at 6 p.m.
The Mountaineers (1-1) are coming off a performance in which they split matches against Morehead State and Marshall nearly two weekends ago at the Huntington Tennis Center in Huntington, W.Va.
WVU opened its season by defeating Morehead State, 6-1, but fell the next day to Marshall, 7-0.
WVU is led by seniors Stacey Percival and Monica Lyskawa. Percival, a regular at the No. 1 singles position, is off to an 0-2 start and looks to rebound this weekend. Lyskawa, playing at No. 2 singles, is 1-1 this season after defeating Morehead State’s Madeleinne Antero, 6-1, 6-2.
Liberty, picked to finish fourth in the 2008 Big South Conference Preseason Women’s Tennis Poll, begins its season by traveling to Morgantown. The Lady Flames return all-conference doubles player Martyna Hanusz as well as junior Ekaternia Kuznetsova.
WVU head coach Marc Walters is not worried about how his team will perform following a two week layoff between matches.
“The first weekend was so soon to play,” says Walters. “We’ve had some very good practices since then and we are excited about playing at home.”
