Gymnastics: Morris, Purkat Earn EAGL Awards

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnasts Mehgan Morris and Shelly Purkat were recognized by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) today for their outstanding performances in the team’s home opener Sunday against Oklahoma, George Washington and William & Mary.
Morris was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week, while Purkat earned her second consecutive EAGL Specialist of the Week award.
Morris, a junior, matched or set season-high marks on bars (9.85), beam (9.75) and floor (9.825) in Sunday’s quad meet. The Belle, W.Va., native finished third at the meet on both the bars and beam. This marks the second time this season Morris has earned this honor.
Purkat, a native of Edina, Minn., placed second on floor with a career-best 9.875 mark and scored a 9.725 on beam to finish in sixth place. It was the sophomore’s second consecutive week with at least a 9.8 on the floor exercise.
New Hampshire freshman Chelsea Steinberg was named the EAGL Rookie of the Week.
West Virginia returns to action at Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m., at Rec Hall in University Park, Pa.
