MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University wrestler Zac Fryling has been named EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) wrestler of the week after finishing 2-0 in dual meets against Clarion and Bloomsburg.
The Lansdale, Pa., native helped lead the Mountaineers (5-3, 2-0) to consecutive victories over both EWL opponents. WVU defeated Clarion, 35-3, last Thursday, followed by a convincing 21-12 victory over previously ranked Bloomsburg on Friday.
Fryling’s greatest effort came against No. 18 ranked Matt Moley of Bloomsburg in the 157-pound bout. Fryling defeated Moley in a 3-1 decision in overtime after scoring the match-winning takedown with six seconds left in the extra period.
In the bout against Clarion’s Travis Uncapher, Fryling earned a 13-6 decision in a hard-fought match in which he scored four takedowns in the first period to jump out to a manageable lead.
The senior physical education major is now 8-4 overall, including 5-3 in dual matches. He is currently ranked No. 19 in the latest USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll.
Fryling becomes the second Mountaineer this season to earn the award, as Kurt Brenner was named EWL wrestler of the week on Jan. 7. Fryling also garnered EWL honors last season on Feb. 12, 2007, making him a two-time winner.
