Gymnastics: Bieski, Purkat Honored by EAGL

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnasts Amy Bieski and Shelly Purkat were honored by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) today.
Bieski claimed her second career Rookie of the Week award, while Purkat earned Specialist of the Week honors from the league after helping WVU score a season-high 193.050 points to top Maryland on Jan. 18.
Bieski, a freshman, competed on all four events to score 38.475 points in the all-around. The Nanticoke, Pa., native scored a 9.8 on vault and 9.825 on floor to win both events, while also notching a 9.675 on bars for a fourth-place finish.
Purkat, a sophomore from Edina, Minn., earns her first career EAGL honor after posting season-highs on beam (9.75) and floor (9.8) against the Terps.
The Mountaineers’ home opener is Sunday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m., as WVU faces Oklahoma, George Washington and William & Mary at the WVU Coliseum.
