MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team earned a Team Ethics Award for sportsmanship and five Mountaineers were named Scholar All-East Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
West Virginia is one of 50 teams from all divisions of collegiate soccer to claim the Silver Award, given to teams that accumulated no red cards and a maximum of five yellow cards throughout the season. The Team Ethics Award recognizes teams “that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the Laws of the Game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.”
Seniors Ashley Banks (Forensics/3.35) and Kim Bonilla (Advertising/3.46) were named to the 2007 NSCAA/adidas College Women Scholar All-East Region first team. Juniors Lisa DuCote (Exercise Physiology/3.77), Krystle Kallman (Business and Economics/3.72) and Robin Rushton (Political Science/3.44) were named Scholar All-East Region honorable mention selections.
Banks and Bonilla were named Scholar All-Americans, the first women’s soccer players since Laura Kane was a two-time selection in 2003 and 2004.
West Virginia made its first NCAA Elite Eight appearance this season with a record of 18-5-2, tying the school record for victories in a season. The Mountaineers won the BIG EAST Conference’s regular season division and tournament titles.
