MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- Freshman shooter Brandi Eskew shot a record breaking 589 in air rifle to lead the West Virginia University rifle team to a 4615-4599 win over Nebraska today at the Mountaineer rifle range. The win was the first over the Cornhuskers since 2003.
Eskew started the match shooting a 574 in smallbore before breaking the air rifle record set at 587 on Nov. 14, 2004. Eskew ended the match with a total of 1163 points.
“I shot a little low in smallbore but things came together for me in air rifle,” comments Eskew. “I think this was an even field, and overall it was a really good match.”
Freshman Andy Lamson shot a season and collegiate high of 578 in smallbore to take third place in the meet, behind Nebraska’s Kristen Weiss and WVU’s Tommy Santelli. Santelli led the Mountaineers in the event with a score of 579.
Senior Natasha Dinsmore's 566 score in smallbore was a personal best for her four year career, while junior Paul Miller again tied his personal best in the event with a 570.
Behind Eskew in air rifle was freshman Kyle Smith who shot a 581 for second place. Nebraska’s Elisha LaFond shot a 580 to lead the Cornhuskers in the event.
“This was a great win for us and a great start to the semester,” comments Head Coach Jon Hammond. “The match was close after smallbore and we held it together in air rifle. Brandi (Eskew) did really well and it was nice to beat a team that we haven’t beaten in five years.”
Next up, WVU will travel Palmyra, Pa., to shoot at the Palmyra Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 13.
