Tennis: WVU Dominant on Day One

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team got off to a strong start at the Martha Thorn Invitational on Friday, Sept. 7, at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
The team got off to a strong start in doubles play. Seniors Stacey Percival and Monica Lyskawa defeated Baronayte-Bowlin of West Virginia State, 8-1, in Flight ‘A.’
Sophomores Stephanie LaFortune and Alexandra Kaluza defeated Adkins-Bowen of Morehead State, 8-1, in Flight ‘B.’ A second team, Ashley Renee Pilsbury and Monique Burton, continued the Mountaineer’s dominance by defeating Delaney-Lakow of Morehead State, 8-3, helping the Mountaineers win all three matches in doubles play.
WVU excelled in singles play as well, winning six of seven matches. Kaluza recorded a 6-2, 6-1, win in Flight ‘B.’ Later in the evening Gabriela Blaskovicova notched a 6-0, 6-2, victory in the same bracket and Stacey Percival won 6-2, 7-5, in Flight ‘B’ to advance to the second round as well.
In Flight ‘C’ singles, junior Colleen Speaker upended Erica Lewis of Charleston, 6-2, 6-0. Pilsbury also capped her impressive day by shutting out Cathryn Payne of West Virginia State, 6-0, 6-0. Burton gave the Mountaineers a sweep through Flight ‘C’ with a resounding 6-0, 6-0, victory over Charleston’s Jessica McGuire.
Lyskawa, one of two WVU singles player in Flight ‘A,’ easily defeated Erica Blakely of West Virginia State, 6-0, 6-0.
Senior Natalia Prinz was forced to forfeit her singles match in Flight ‘A’ after leaving with a pinched nerve in her neck.
The invitational continues tomorrow at 9 a.m., with second round and quarterfinal play resuming.
