MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 20 West Virginia University men’s soccer team (1-1-0) will face No. 6 Maryland (1-0-1) on Friday, Sept. 6, in College Park, Md., for an 8 p.m. kick off. The game will be televised on tape delay by CSTV and will air on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast live on WMUC radio. Live stats will be available on http://umterps.cstv.com.
The Mountaineers last faced Maryland in the 1971 NCAA tournament when WVU beat Maryland 1-0. The match was the teams’ one and only meeting.
WVU is coming off of its first win of the season after defeating Penn State 1-0 on Sept. 2 in Columbus, Ohio. Senior Andy Wright headed a goal into the far post in the 41st minute of the first half off of an assist by senior Dan Stratford. PSU fouled freshman Paul Paradise and WVU was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. Stratford placed a high ball which found Wright who hit the net.
The Terps tied No. 7 Indiana 1-1 (2ot) on Aug. 31, and defeated No. 10 Notre Dame 3-0 on Sept. 2, in the team’s first weekend of action. Maryland is ranked No. 6 in the NSCAA/adidas poll and No. 4 in the Soccer America poll, both released earlier this week. Maryland won the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic last weekend.
After the Maryland contest, WVU will host Duquesne on Monday, Sept. 10, in the team’s home opener at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
