MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team (1-1) is now ranked No. 21 in the Soccer America weekly poll, released today, after going 1-1 last week at the Bert and Iris Wolstein Soccer Classic.
WVU fell to Ohio State 1-0 in the squad’s season opener on Aug. 31. A penalty kick in the first five minutes of the match resulted in the game-winner for the Buckeyes. Red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Zach Johnson made his collegiate debut in the net for the Mountaineers recording four saves in a full 90 minutes. WVU posted seven shots and seven corner kicks
The Mountaineers defeated head coach Marlon LeBlanc’s alma mater, Penn State, 1-0 Sept. 2, to close out the Bert and Iris Wolstein Soccer Classic. The win was the first of the 2007 season for the Mountaineers. Senior Andy Wright headed a goal into the far post in the 41st minute of the first half off of an assist by senior Dan Stratford. PSU fouled freshman Paul Paradise and WVU was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. Stratford placed a high ball which found Wright who hit the net.
Both Wright and Stratford earned all-tournament team honors for their efforts.
Next up, West Virginia will travel to Maryland to take on the Terrapins in College Park, Md., for a 7 p.m. kick off on Friday. The game will be taped by CSTV and will air on tape-delay on Sept. 9 at 8 p.m.
