Men's Soccer: WVU Falls to USF in 2OT

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 16 USF in double overtime today at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
USF’s Andre Mittoo headed a line drive past freshman goalkeeper Zach Johnson in the third minute of the second overtime period to win sudden victory over the Mountaineers. A foul was called on WVU, and a direct kick was awarded to Simon Schoendorf who found Mittoo in front of the net.
The Bulls held a 22-11 shot advantage over the Mountaineers. USF goalkeeper, Diego Restrepo, recorded six saves to Johnson’s three. The Mountaineer defense was vital in the match, recording two team saves.
“This was a tough loss for us,” comments Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc. “The kids played well today. We will take this loss, learn from it, and make it into a positive.”
The Mountaineers are now 6-3 on the season, and 2-2 in conference play. The game marked the ninth time this season where the Mountaineers’ fate has been decided by just one goal. WVU is now 1-1 in overtime situations.
Next up, the Mountaineers will face BIG EAST foe, Notre Dame when the squad travels to South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, Oct. 6. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
