BOX SCORE
MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- Sophomore Tony Lindroos scored the game-winning goal in the final minutes of the first half as the No. 8/14 West Virginia University men’s soccer team defeated DePaul 1-0 tonight at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The victory is the second straight BIG EAST win and lifts the Mountaineers to a 6-2 overall record on the season.
Senior Andy Wright hit a strong pass to Pat Carroll who was on the far right side of the field heading toward net. Carroll crossed the ball into Lindroos who hit a shot past the DePaul goalkeeper at the 37:47 mark. The goal was the first of the season for Lindroos and just the second of his collegiate career.
Strong and physical play was seen, but both squads were held scoreless in the second half.
WVU outshot the Blue Demons 11-10 and held a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Goalkeeper Zach Johnson earned his sixth shutout and has yet to be scored on in the run-of-play. The freshman recorded four saves.
WVU will continue their home stint to play host to USF Bulls Sunday, Sept. 30 at Noon. The Mountaineers and the Bulls have battled 14 times before this weekend’s face-off. The series began in 1969 and USF holds the lead at 9-3-2. WVU won the last match, eliminating the Bulls from the BIG EAST tournament in the quarterfinal round last season.
