MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team placed second with 118 points at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday, Sept. 28.
WVU finished second in a race that featured four nationally ranked teams, No. 5 Wisconsin, No. 16 Princeton, No. 25 Texas Tech and No. 26 Tennessee. Princeton defended its race title, winning with 45 points. Texas Tech was third with 154 points followed by Wisconsin (157), Syracuse (191). Tennessee finished in eighth with 281 points.
Sophomore Marie-Louise Asselin took third with a time of 20:19. Sophomore Keri Bland finished seventh in 20:41. Sophomore Clara Grandt was 15th (21:01), while freshmen Kate Harrison and Kaylyn Christopher finished 39th and 54th, respectively. Sophomore Maria Dalzot was the final Mountaineer competitor at 91st (22:27).
“It’s still very early but it’s a nice way to get confidence for this team,” Head Coach Sean Cleary says.
The race marked the first time that Asselin, Bland and Dalzot competed in a Mountaineer uniform this season.
WVU last competed in this race in 2003 and took fourth. The Mountaineers, led by All-American Megan Metcalfe, had five of their top seven runners finish in the top 25.
The Mountaineers return to action at the Penn State National Open on Oct. 12, in State College, Pa., at 4 p.m.
