MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Deana Everrett and Carolyn Blank scored goals to power West Virginia to a 2-0 victory over St. John’s Friday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.
Everett’s fifth goal of the season came just 4:45 into the contest when she kicked in a Krystle Kallman’s flick up the middle off an Ashley Banks throw in.
“The girls wanted to play 90 minutes of intense soccer and I think they showed just that tonight,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Our forwards did an excellent job of making themselves visible. They were able to expose some gaps that St. John’s presented for us.”
West Virginia’s insurance goal came at 55:38 when Carolyn Banks was credited with a goal off a Kim Bonilla corner kick.
The Mountaineers (6-3, 2-0) took 27 shots including 11 on goal. The 11 shots on goal mark the third time this season WVU has registered at least 10 shots on goal (10 vs. Pitt; 13 vs. Rhode Island). West Virginia also held a 15-1 advantage in corner kicks.
West Virginia keeper Mallory Beck registered three saves to record her third shutout of the season.
“It was a nice team effort and shutouts are what you want as a coach,” said Izzo-Brown. “We did a lot of things well tonight.”
St. John’s, credited with six shots including three shots on goal, drops to 6-1-2 and 1-1 in BIG EAST play.
WVU has a quick turnaround traveling to Pittsburgh tonight for a Saturday morning flight to Syracuse where the Mountaineers will play the Orange Sunday afternoon. The BIG EAST contest will kick off at 1 p.m. at SU Soccer Stadium.
