Volleyball: Mountaineers Defeat DePaul in Five

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team defeated DePaul this evening in its first BIG EAST match of the season, at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (9-4) fought hard defeating the Blue Demons 3-2 (30-23, 30-26, 26-30, 27-30, 15-13).
With 10 lead changes and 21 tied scores, the Mountaineers stepped up and posted 28 team kills and 32 team blocks to take games one and two. Then in game three the momentum changed as DePaul came back fighting to defeat West Virginia.
Game four proved to be exciting as the Mountaineers found themselves down 21-29. Refusing to give up the Mountaineers did their best to come back as senior Kailee Goold sparked the team with a service ace that sent the Mountaineers on a 7-0 run. The Blue Demons then posted a heartbreaking kill to send the match into five games.
Down 4-9 early in game five, West Virginia regained the momentum as freshman outside hitter Abby Norman posted six kills to lead the Mountaineers to victory.
Leading the Mountaineers were seniors Abby Tevis and Goold, who both posted double-doubles in the win. Tevis recorded 21 kills and 16 digs, while Goold captured a season high 53 assists and 15 digs.
The Mountaineers will continue BIG EAST action on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. as they face Notre Dame at the WVU Coliseum.
