MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey today announced the hiring of Donnie Johnson as director of basketball operations.
A Clarksburg, W.Va., native, Johnson spent last season as WVU’s women’s basketball graduate assistant coach. Prior to his arrival at WVU, Johnson served as the head women’s coach at Salem International from 2004-06. He was a volunteer assistant coach at Glenville State from 2002-03.
“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to continue working with West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team,” Johnson says. “Coach Carey has built an excellent program and I’m very thankful to continue to be a part of that tradition. As a state native, I’m also very thankful that I’m able to stay close to home and continue to help this program grow in the right direction.”
Johnson played for Carey at Salem from 1997-2001 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health from Salem in 2001. He has accumulated hours towards a master’s degree in athletic coaching education at WVU.
“I’ve been associated with Donnie for a lot of years,” Carey says. “He is a former player of mine at Salem, has head coaching experience and he was our graduate assistant coach last year, here. I’m excited to have him as our director of basketball operations. He understands how we run our program and what we’re trying to accomplish here at WVU. It should be a smooth transition.”
Johnson currently resides in Morgantown.
