MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 13th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team opens BIG EAST play Friday, Sept. 21, at Pitt. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Founders Field in Cheswick, Pa.
West Virginia is 6-5 in BIG EAST openers since joining the league in 1996. Friday’s contest marks the fourth time Pitt will be the Mountaineers’ first BIG EAST opponent on the schedule. WVU has won two of those three matches: 2002 (4-2), 2005 (1-2) and 2006 (4-1).
Pitt, which shares a 4-2 record with WVU, is led by junior Jennifer Kritch. The attacking midfielder has two goals and an assist this year. The Panthers enter Friday’s match having won two straight while averaging 1.67 goals per outing.
On Sunday, Sept. 23, WVU looks to remain unbeaten at home with a 1 p.m. match against Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are the fourth first-time opponent West Virginia has played this fall. Wake Forest, 3-3-1 on the year, is led by sophomore Jill Hutchinson. The forward leads her team in goals (3) and shots (18), and has two game-winners this season.
WVU has won all four home matches in 2007 and 19 of its last 22 games at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers are looking to extend their consecutive NCAA tournament appearance streak to eight this fall.
