BOX SCORE
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team used a strong 10-minute second half run to defeat 15th-ranked West Virginia, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium.
After a scoreless back-and-forth first half, Virginia tallied three goals to take control of the match. The first Cavalier goal came from midfielder Nikki Krzysik off a free kick in the match’s 51st minute.
“It was sort of a tale of two halves. The big difference in the match was Virginia executed on set pieces,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “They scored on a corner kick and a direct kick. I have to give Virginia credit because they executed when it counted.”
Virginia forward Shannon Foley then scored in the 52nd and 61st minutes to give UVA a 3-0 advantage.
The Mountaineers battled the Cavaliers to a scoreless first half with both teams finding few scoring opportunities.
Senior forward Ashley Banks was stopped on WVU’s best scoring chance of the match in the 27th minute. UVA goalkeeper Chantel Jones made a sliding stop with Banks charging at her one-on-one for the save.
WVU goalkeeper Mallory Beck foiled Virginia’s best scoring opportunity in first half at the 40-minute mark. Beck made a diving, one-armed save on a clear shot fired by Virginia’s Jess Rostedt.
A physical Virginia team registered 16 shots on the afternoon. Jones picked up her second career win in goal with three saves.
West Virginia took seven shots while sophomore Beck stopped four Cavalier shots in dropping to 1-1 on the young season.
The Mountaineers return to action next weekend with a pair of home matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium against Rhode Island (Sept. 7) and 7th-ranked Penn State (Sept. 9).
